Although using an electric kettle to boil water is simple, many people make mistakes that can shorten the device’s lifespan and harm health. Electric kettles are popular for their convenience—just fill with water, turn on the switch, and wait a few minutes for boiling water. However, here are five common mistakes made by 9 out of 10 households:
1. Assuming Any Electric Kettle is Fine
Many believe all electric kettles are the same as long as they boil water. However, it’s important to choose kettles made of stainless steel, specifically 304 stainless steel, which is resistant to corrosion and can withstand high temperatures. This ensures safer water after boiling.
2. Overfilling the Kettle
Filling the kettle beyond the marked maximum water level can cause overflow as the water boils, potentially seeping into the base and causing damage or a short circuit. Always adhere to the maximum water level indicated inside the kettle.
3. Adding Water After Turning on the Kettle
Some people turn on the kettle first and then add water. This can lead to the kettle boiling dry, risking damage and electrical issues. Always fill the kettle with water before placing it on the base and plugging it in. Also, check for any water stains on the base and wipe it dry to prevent short circuits.
4. Completely Emptying the Kettle
After boiling water, it’s common to transfer it to a thermos or water bottle. However, it’s better to leave a little water in the kettle. Emptying it completely while the base is still hot can dry out the thermal relay, shortening the kettle’s lifespan. Instead, pour out any excess water and clean the kettle before the next use.
5. Neglecting to Clean the Kettle
Over time, residue can build up inside the kettle, leading to yellow scaling. This not only affects the kettle’s performance but can also impact the purity of the water. Regular cleaning is essential. To clean, add half a bowl of water and white vinegar to the kettle, boil it, and let it sit for about ten minutes before draining. This will help reduce any residue at the bottom.
By avoiding these common mistakes, you can ensure your electric kettle lasts longer and continues to provide safe, clean water.
