My Husband Refused to Have an Open Marriage After I Started Dating

An open marriage should always be a mutual decision. In this case, it seems that our reader’s relationship wasn’t truly equal. While her husband dated other women, he quickly changed the rules when she started dating as well. To make matters worse, he never played fair to begin with.

One of our readers reached out to share her experience.

Get a divorce.

It’s clear that your husband is using the concept of an “open marriage” as an excuse to officially date other women. If he truly supported your needs, he would have been okay with you finding a partner. Instead, he disregarded your feelings and broke his promises. You need to decide if you really want to spend your life with someone who clearly doesn’t want to be loyal to you.

Focus on your own needs and principles.

Take some time to reflect on what you truly want and prioritize in the relationship. Consider whether an open marriage aligns with your values and if you feel respected and valued by your husband. It’s perfectly acceptable to prioritize your own well-being. If the open marriage no longer serves you or if trust has been compromised, think about finding a partner who shares your values.

Take care of yourself.

You’ve been working hard for a year, and you deserve some time to rest. Focus on your own well-being, hobbies, and interests outside of the relationship. If possible, take a vacation or spend time with friends.

Remember, you deserve to be treated with respect and honesty. You shouldn’t tolerate disrespectful behavior from your husband. During this time, you might find someone who appreciates you more.

Talk to your friends and family.

If you’re still uncertain about your feelings, consider discussing your thoughts and concerns with close friends or family. They can provide insights or advice based on their own experiences, or simply listen to you without judgment. If your feelings are too complex and overwhelming, think about seeking professional guidance from a therapist or counselor.
