Richard Gere has decided to leave the United States after a remarkable career that has established him as an American icon. For his fans, this marks the beginning of a new chapter that is both touching and bittersweet.

The actor is celebrated for his contributions to American cinema. For over 50 years, Gere has captivated audiences with his outstanding performances and charismatic presence, becoming a defining figure in Hollywood.

Despite his success, he has long preferred a life away from the constant spotlight of Hollywood. Now, he is taking a more significant step: he is leaving America entirely. So, what is the reason behind this unexpected move?

Richard Gere’s Legendary Career and New Chapter
Richard has become one of the most beloved actors in the industry thanks to his roles in classic films like “Pretty Woman,” “An Officer and a Gentleman,” and “Chicago.”

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on August 31, 1949, he gained fame in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He quickly proved to be a versatile actor, capable of portraying a wide range of characters, from charming romantic leads to complex figures.

His numerous accolades over the years, including a Golden Globe for his performance in “Chicago,” have solidified his status as a Hollywood icon.

However, despite his fame and success, Gere has consistently shown a preference for a life away from Hollywood’s limelight. In recent years, he has focused on humanitarian efforts, using his platform to raise awareness for causes such as global peace and human rights.

Now, he has made the significant personal decision to leave the United States and move to Spain to embrace a more relaxed, family-oriented lifestyle, driven by his passion for meaningful, quieter pursuits.

In an interview conducted in early 2024, Richard spoke openly about his desire to relocate, expressing excitement for the journey ahead. He revealed that his family would soon be moving to Madrid, a decision influenced partly by his wife Alejandra Silva’s strong Spanish roots.

“I’ve never lived abroad full-time, so I think living in Madrid will be an incredible adventure. I think it’s only fair that I give her at least another six years living in her world since she generously gave me six years living in mine,” he stated in an interview with Vanity Fair España.

“Anyway, I think your way of life is wonderful, and I love Spain. The ability to live a happy, joyful life is essential. It’s a beautiful place, the food is amazing, and the people are so warm and sensitive; they have a great desire to laugh and have fun.”

The move will give his young children a rare opportunity to connect with their Spanish heritage and grow up surrounded by the culture that influenced their mother’s life.

“I’m looking forward to going there,” Richard said, noting how beneficial it would be for Alejandra to be closer to her family and friends.

As part of this transition, the couple’s sale of their Connecticut estate in October 2024 attracted media attention. The property spanned roughly 32 acres of picturesque countryside, complete with wooded trails, gardens, a pool, and even a waterfall. Richard had purchased the estate from musician Paul Simon and his wife Edie Brickell just two years prior.

Although the sale resulted in a slight financial loss, it underscored his commitment to starting this new chapter. Before moving to Connecticut, Richard lived in the upscale neighborhood of Pound Ridge, New York, where he sold his home in 2022.

With the sale of their Connecticut house, Richard and Alejandra are one step closer to beginning their new life in Spain, trading the hectic American lifestyle for the tranquility and cultural richness of Madrid.

Richard Gere’s Family Life and Life Outside of Hollywood
In 2018, Richard and Alejandra married in a heartfelt ceremony in Madrid. Since then, they have welcomed two children and built a close-knit family.

Reflecting on their journey together, Richard shared a story that highlights their shared values and the depth of their bond. When Alejandra first visited him at his home in upstate New York, he introduced her to meditation, a significant aspect of his life.

Richard recalled that Alejandra’s interest in his meditation practice went beyond mere curiosity. He described her questions as stemming from a place of genuine sincerity and a desire to learn, saying, “She really wanted to know.”

This initial curiosity sparked their mutual interest in spirituality and personal growth. Alejandra eventually embraced Richard’s Buddhist practices, and their shared love of meditation became the foundation of their relationship.

Although their romance blossomed away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood, Richard has always maintained a connection to New York. For the past 25 years, he has preferred the serenity of the East Coast over the chaos of Los Angeles.

“The first thing that comes to mind when I hear the word Hollywood is that it feels very foreign to me,” he remarked, noting that he hasn’t lived in California or filmed a movie in Los Angeles for decades.

Instead of focusing on the demands of mainstream Hollywood, he has shifted towards more independent projects and meaningful work. His desire to remain close to his son, 24-year-old Homer James Jigme Gere, who lives nearby, also drew him to New York.

In 2000, the “Pretty Woman” star and his longtime girlfriend, Carey Lowell, a former “Law & Order” actress, welcomed their first child together. He prioritizes being a consistent presence in his son’s life, which he has achieved by staying in New York.
