Out of breath and clearly panicked, the soldier rushed up to the nun and pleaded, “Please, may I hide under your skirt? I’ll explain later.” Understanding the urgency in his voice, the nun agreed without hesitation, her eyes scanning the surroundings to ensure they wouldn’t be caught.
Moments later, two Military Police officers ran up, their boots echoing against the ground as they inquired, “Sister, have you seen a soldier?”
With a calm demeanor, the nun pointed in the direction the soldier had darted. “He went that way,” she replied, her voice steady and unwavering. As the MPs hurried off, the soldier crawled out from his hiding place, relief washing over his face. “I can’t thank you enough, sister. You see, I don’t want to go to S*ria,” he explained, a hint of desperation in his tone.
The nun nodded in understanding, recognizing the fear that often accompanies duty in times of conflict. “I understand completely,” she replied, her empathy shining through the gravity of the situation.
Then, with a flicker of humor to lighten the mood, the soldier added, “I hope I’m not rude, but you have a great pair of legs!” The nun paused for a moment, then responded with a sly grin, “If you had looked a little higher, you would have seen a great pair of balls…. I don’t want to go to S*ria either.”
In that brief exchange, amidst the chaos surrounding them, a bond was formed—a mix of courage, understanding, and the lightheartedness that often springs up in the most unexpected moments. The soldier left with a renewed sense of hope, buoyed by the nun’s kindness and her shared reluctance to face the horrors of war.
