Some people believe that money can spoil a person, but we think it reveals their true character. Some will use their wealth to create better lives for their families, while others will squabble with relatives over every penny of inheritance.
I broke my phone screen, and my boyfriend said he’d handle it. Being a man, he accompanied me to buy a new screen. When the seller quoted the price, my boyfriend hesitated and then put his wallet away! After a silent pause, I paid for it myself. I ended up breaking up with him, saying we were just different. © Overheard / Ideer
I lent a female coworker some money before payday, but she kept pretending she couldn’t remember to pay me back. Eventually, I lost my patience and confronted her during lunch, saying, “Valentina, when will you return my money?” She just smiled sweetly and replied, “Money? I thought we were friends.” © Not everyone will understand / VK
I inherited a house from my aunt near the city. It looks ordinary from the outside, but inside, it has a stunning interior with well-thought-out furniture and harmonious colors. After moving in, I realized that in my stretched-out home dress with Mickey Mouse, I didn’t fit this beauty. Now, I’m off to buy a silk dressing gown with lace—my new home dress code! © Overheard / Ideer
When I turned 18, I was set to receive a check for 18 years of precap with interest. Six months before my birthday, my aunt quit her job and started working at a small credit union. She asked me to move my accounts there to help her meet quotas, promising joint accounts with benefits. Ten months later, I thought she was doing well when she started remodeling her house and spending nights at the bar. I later found out she had withdrawn my money from our joint account without my knowledge. When I tried to change banks because I was moving, she said I couldn’t get my money back and claimed it was what my mother wanted in her will. When that was disproven, she insisted she deserved it more than I did. © K****r_Tomato / Reddit
My great-grandmother left my mother a house in the village. She had five sons, each with several children, but the house was bequeathed to her only granddaughter. Some family members were upset, and to avoid conflict, my grandparents forbade my mother from selling it. Now, 20 years later, the house is falling apart and no one wants it. Only one of my great-grandmother’s sons is still alive, and the rest of the family has scattered. If my mom had been allowed to sell it back then, she could have gotten a good price. With that money, my parents could have bought a flat instead of living in a dormitory room. Now, the house is just an expense, and no one even wants the land in the village. © Landysh Khairutdinova / ADME
A friend has three sisters who are triplets and 12 years younger. They all lived in a one-bedroom apartment, and after their father left the family, he died a year ago, leaving a four-bedroom flat to his sister. She started renovating it right away and a couple of months later, she gave the sisters the keys and documents with the words, “This is my brother’s child support for 10 years.” © Anecdotes from life from anecdotes.net / VK
Many years ago, my father won a car. His mother, who had kicked him out at 15, showed up demanding he sell the car and give half the money to her son-in-law (the husband of his youngest sister). My father refused and kept the car for many years. After his mother passed away, that sister came running, demanding he give up his share of the inheritance. All the relatives on my father’s side are like that—they’re ready to fight for money, so I cut off all contact with them and have no regrets. © Anna Tiedt / ADME
Two years ago, my friend married the daughter of a local millionaire. Soon after, he limited his communication with me. When I ran into him in town, I was disgusted by how he had changed. He spoke arrogantly and nastily. I told him I was happy for him, but I realized that the money had brought out his true nature. Recently, he called me to share his problems: his wife had begun cheating on him a year after childbirth. He had to choose between tolerating it or leaving. He initially put up with it, but then she started humiliating him, saying he was nothing and lived off his father-in-law. Now, he can’t even see his child and lost his money, car, and flat after a fight with his wife. © i###########@gmail.com / y-story
