Vacations are meant to be a time of adventure, relaxation, and creating cherished memories. Whether it’s lounging on a tropical beach, exploring a new city, or enjoying a cozy cabin retreat, people expect their vacations to bring joy and excitement. However, sometimes, those well-laid plans take a sharp turn for the worse, transforming a dream getaway into an absolute nightmare. From eerie encounters to shocking surprises, some travelers find themselves in situations they could have never anticipated.

These are the stories of individuals whose vacation accommodations turned into unforgettable experiences for all the wrong reasons. Buckle up, because these unsettling tales prove that sometimes, the scariest part of a trip isn’t the destination—it’s where you stay.

Story 1: The Romantic Getaway That Revealed a Costly Truth

My boyfriend planned a romantic weekend at a luxurious hotel. Everything was perfect—beautiful views, excellent service, and an intimate setting that felt like a fairytale. That is, until checkout.

His card was declined. He turned bright red, muttered something about a bank error, and nervously asked if I could cover the bill. Trusting him completely, I smiled and paid without a second thought.

As we were leaving, the receptionist discreetly pulled me aside. “Be careful,” she whispered. “I’ve seen this guy do the same thing with other women. He comes here, his card gets declined, and they end up paying for everything.”

I refused to believe her at first. We were still in the early stages of our relationship, and I had no reason to doubt him. But over time, subtle patterns began to emerge—he conveniently ‘forgot’ his wallet on outings, claimed his banking app was glitching, and started pressuring me to cover increasingly large expenses.

The final straw? He tried to convince me to invest in a shady business scheme, subtly pushing me to hand over my savings. That’s when I knew. I ended things immediately. To this day, I regret not heeding that receptionist’s warning—because that fateful hotel stay was the beginning of it all.

Story 2: The Unexpected Guest

My dad once checked into a hotel and was given a room on the first floor. He walked in, set his bags down, and decided to open the curtains to let in some light.

A man was crouching behind them.

Without missing a beat, my dad calmly said, “Excuse me,” shut the curtains, grabbed his belongings, and walked straight back to the front desk.

Shaken, he told the receptionist what had just happened. As it turned out, the man was a fugitive who had just robbed a nearby store and somehow snuck into the hotel room through an unlocked window. Security and the police were called immediately, and the man was arrested on-site.

Needless to say, my dad opted to stay somewhere else that night.

Story 3: The Airbnb Owner Who Watched Too Closely

Staying at an Airbnb was supposed to be a cozy, home-away-from-home experience. My husband and I had found a charming listing with great reviews, excited for a peaceful getaway.

That excitement quickly turned into horror.

While getting ready for bed, I noticed something strange—a small camera lens embedded in the wall. It was positioned directly in front of the bed. My heart pounded as I pointed it out to my husband, who quickly covered it with a towel. We told ourselves we’d deal with it in the morning and tried to sleep.

At 2 a.m., our bedroom door BURST open. The Airbnb owner stood in the doorway, furious.

“You idiots! That camera isn’t for spying on you—it’s to monitor the outside! Why did you cover it?!”

Shaken, we barely managed to respond as he ranted about recent thefts in the neighborhood, claiming he was using the camera to watch for intruders. However, the fact that he had a key, barged in unannounced, and monitored guests’ activity all night was beyond disturbing.

We left first thing in the morning, leaving an honest review to warn others. A quick look at other reviews revealed we weren’t the only ones he had terrorized. While security concerns are understandable, breaking into a guest’s room in the dead of night crossed every possible boundary.

Story 4: The Motel of Despair

I needed a place to stay for my daughter’s gymnastics competition and found what seemed like a decent motel with good reviews. The price was right, so I booked it.

The first red flag? I couldn’t even find the place. The sign wasn’t lit, the parking lot was completely dark, and two sketchy men loitered near the entrance.

When I finally checked in, the lobby was dimly lit with flickering lights. My heart sank as I opened the door to my room. Stained sheets, holes in the bedspread, and clumps of hair in the shower greeted me.

The so-called ‘fitness room’ consisted of a single, broken stair-stepper and a dusty old TV on the floor—also broken.

I went straight to the front desk. “I’d like to cancel my reservation.”

The receptionist sighed. “I don’t blame you. This place is gross. I have an interview at Kohl’s next week, and I hope they hire me so I can quit.”

I left immediately.

Story 5: A Room Full of Nightmares

I was four years old when this happened, but my siblings still talk about it to this day.

Our family and some friends were staying in a hotel, and all five of us kids—ranging from ages 4 to 13—were left in one room while the adults went out for the evening. We were snuggled on the bed watching a movie when suddenly, the floor vibrated, and a loud noise echoed through the room.

Then, out of nowhere, hundreds—if not thousands—of tiny spiders began crawling up the walls from two bottom corners of the room.

Panic set in. Our first instinct was to fight back. We grabbed marshmallows and ice cubes from the minibar, pelting the spiders in sheer desperation. When that failed, we barricaded ourselves in the bathroom, stuffing towels under the door and huddling together in terror.

With no phones and strict instructions not to leave the room, we were trapped. I ended up sleeping in the bathtub with my sister, too scared to move.

When our parents finally returned hours later, they opened the door and let out a collective scream at the horrifying scene.

To this day, I still feel a phantom itch every time I check into a hotel.

These stories are proof that even the most well-planned vacations can take an unexpected turn. While most hotels and rentals are safe and welcoming, it’s always good to stay alert, trust your instincts, and maybe—just maybe—check behind the curtains.

After all, you never know what (or who) might be waiting.
