The room was filled with the soft melodies of Billie Holiday, her sultry voice enveloping the couple nestled on the white sofa. In his thirties, Herman was lost in a moment of passion with his lover, Jezebel, as they enjoyed their private time in the dimly lit living room.
“This is so naughty of us!” she whispered, a playful smile on her lips. “What if your wife comes home early?”
“It’s been at least a year since my wife got home early!” Herman replied confidently. “We have the whole morning.”
“The whole morning!” Jezebel echoed, her excitement growing. “Well, Mr. Loverman, let’s make the most of it then. Give me a kiss that means something.”
Herman tossed his sweater aside, grinning. “That’s not all I’m going to do. Just wait.”
They were lost in their moment when suddenly, a door creaked open, freezing them in place. Panic surged through them; Herman’s wife wasn’t expected back for hours.
“Who is it?” Jezebel whispered, her eyes wide with fear.
“It can’t be my wife,” Herman insisted, his voice low. “She told me she had to work late.”
Just then, the front door slammed shut, and a young voice broke the tension. “Dad? Are you there?” Jake, Herman’s son, walked in with a bag slung over his shoulder.
“What are you doing home, Jake?” Herman asked, his anger barely masked.
“They sent us home early because of a scare,” Jake explained. “They thought there was a gunman at the school.” He then turned his attention to Jezebel. “Who is this woman?”
Herman quickly scrambled for an excuse. “Jake, you must be seeing things. There’s no one here.”
“But I see a woman right there!” Jake insisted, pointing at Jezebel.
Thinking fast, Herman concocted a story. “You’re just a little shaken up from the scare. Focus on ten and close your eyes. The ghost can’t see you if you can’t see it. If you do that, it will go away.”
As Jake complied and began counting, Jezebel slipped into the bedroom, hoping to remain hidden. When Jake opened his eyes, the woman was gone.
“See? Nothing there,” Herman said, trying to reassure his son, though his heart raced with the fear of being discovered.
