The recent flash floods in Texas have left over 100 people dead and many more missing. Among the most heartbreaking stories is that of John Burges, a father from Liberty, Texas, who was swept away by floodwaters while holding tightly to his two young sons. Despite desperate pleas from rescuers, he refused to let go of his children.

His wife, Julia, and the boys are still missing. Their daughter, who was at a nearby summer camp, survived. The Burges family had been staying at the Blue Oak RV Park in Kerr County for the Fourth of July weekend. Lorena Guillen, the park’s owner, recalled hearing screams in the night as the river rose rapidly, destroying everything in its path.

She described cabins floating away and people calling for help in total darkness. Nearby Camp Mystic also suffered heavy losses. The camp confirmed that at least 27 children and counselors have died, and 11 remain unaccounted for. The camp’s beloved director, Dick Eastland, died while trying to save the children.

As the search continues, communities across Texas are mourning the lives lost and honoring the courage of those who tried to protect others. The devastation has deeply impacted families, first responders, and local residents alike.
