Lucy had moved in with her son and daughter-in-law after losing her husband, Ron. She wasn’t ready to live alone, so she decided to stay in their home until she felt prepared to manage on her own.
The rent from her own house was going to her son, Connor, as Lucy wanted. She explained that it was her way of showing gratitude. Since Connor worked long hours as an IT technician, Lucy spent most of her time at home with her daughter-in-law, Eve, who was a housewife.
Connor told his mother that she would stay on the first floor, saying, “So, you don’t have to worry about your knees and the stairs,” while he helped carry her luggage.
At first, everything seemed great. Eve was incredibly kind to Lucy, preparing meals and cleaning up afterward. She even refused Lucy’s offers to help.
However, over time, Lucy found herself doing most of the chores on her own, and her old knees were beginning to tire.
A few days before Christmas, while Eve was watching TV, she called out to Lucy. “Lucy,” Eve began, “after you finish the laundry, please go out and buy groceries for tonight’s dinner and for Christmas dinner, too. Nine people are coming over. I’ll give you the money before you leave.”
Lucy was taken aback. They had always shopped together, but this time, Eve was not asking; she was ordering. It dawned on Lucy that the longer she stayed in their house, the more she would become her daughter-in-law’s maid rather than a guest.
Determined to teach Eve a lesson before she left, Lucy drew upon her experience from coming from a large family, knowing how to cook and prepare for many people.
When Christmas arrived, the house was filled with the delicious aromas of the food Lucy had prepared.
As the guests began to arrive and settled around the dinner table, one of Connor’s friends, Ross, exclaimed, “Aunt Lucy, this food is amazing! Did you cook all of it yourself?”
“I did, Ross,” Lucy replied with a smile, feeling a sense of pride.
She noticed Connor beaming with pride at his mother’s success. While Lucy felt happy, she couldn’t shake the sorrow of missing her husband, as this was her first Christmas without Ron.
“Lucy,” Eve remarked, “I doubted that you would make so many delicious things!”
“Thank you, Eve,” Lucy responded, all the while plotting her plan to teach Eve a lesson.
