Technology has become a crucial part of our everyday lives, facilitating connections, helping us navigate our surroundings, and keeping our belongings secure. However, what occurs when the very tools designed to improve our lives are exploited to invade our privacy? While tracking devices and location-sharing features can be beneficial when used appropriately, they can also turn into instruments of control and surveillance if misused. Recently, Bright Side received a letter from a reader who experienced this firsthand after discovering a hidden tracker and the unsettling reality that came with it.

She wrote:

Thank you, Ruby, for sharing this personal and sensitive story with us. We have put together five distinct pieces of advice to help you navigate this difficult situation safely and confidently.

1. Secure Your Technology and Space

Start by thoroughly securing your devices and living environment. Take your phone to a professional to check for spyware or malicious applications that may have been installed. Change all your passwords for email, social media, and financial accounts, opting for strong and unique combinations. Consider installing security cameras or a smart doorbell to monitor who approaches your home. These steps will help you regain your sense of safety and protect you from further privacy invasions.

2. Involve the Authorities

Your ex’s actions cross serious legal lines and should not be overlooked. Report the GPS tracker and the confrontation to the police, documenting everything, including the tracker itself, your ex’s admission, and any other instances of controlling or threatening behavior. Request a restraining order to prevent him from approaching you. This is not just about your immediate safety; it’s about establishing a clear boundary that this behavior is unacceptable. The law exists to protect you, so don’t hesitate to utilize it.

3. Lean on Your Support System

Facing this kind of situation can feel isolating, so reach out to trusted friends or family. Share your experience and ask for their support, whether it’s staying with someone temporarily, checking in on you regularly, or simply being there to listen. You don’t have to go through this alone, and the reassurance of a trusted circle can make a significant difference. Consider informing your workplace or neighbors as well, so they are aware of any potential issues. Safety is a collective effort.

4. Seek Emotional Support and Therapy

Experiences like this can leave lasting emotional scars, even if you feel like you’re managing well. Consider contacting a therapist to help process feelings of fear, betrayal, and discomfort. Therapy can aid in rebuilding your sense of safety and trust in your environment. It also provides a space to explore any lingering effects of the “intense” relationship you mentioned and how it might have influenced your current boundaries. Healing is just as vital as addressing the immediate danger.

5. Set Clear Boundaries with Your Ex

If you feel safe doing so, clearly communicate to your ex that his behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Avoid meeting in person and instead use text or email to maintain a written record. Inform him that you are prepared to take legal action if he contacts you again or continues to track you. The objective is not to engage in a back-and-forth argument but to deliver a firm and clear message. Ensure that all future communication occurs through a lawyer or mediator, if necessary.
